Your home's heating and cooling system comes as a matched package with an outdoor heat pump and an indoor gas furnace. The outdoor heat pump unit sits outside and provides efficient cooling in summer and heating in milder winter weather by moving heat into or out of your home. When temperatures get very cold, the gas furnace provides powerful backup heat. Inside your house - typically in the attic, basement, or utility closet - the furnace contains the blower fan with a coil mounted on top. It draws air from your rooms through return ducts, passes it over the coil or heat exchanger to heat or cool it, and then blows the conditioned air back through your supply ducts into every room. Together they keep your whole house comfortable year-round.
