Three Steps to Healthy Humidity for Winter Wellness

Jan 25, 2023

Humidity control in your home is important to maintaining healthy air and indoor humidity.

Humidity can have a major impact on the way you feel. Depending on your home type, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers recommends keeping your home’s relative humidity between 40-60 percent.

We know that’s a wide range, so keep reading for our recommended optimal setting for most Cleveland and northeast Ohio homes.

What does a humidifier do?

A whole-house humidifier adds moisture to your home’s air. Proper AprilAire humidity has health benefits and can save you money!

Low humidity can cause dry eyes, dry throat, bloody noses, and other health problems. Proper humidification can also save you money on your energy costs.

Your family and indoor air will be healthier with ventilation, air purification, filtration, and humidity control.

Set your AprilAire Humidifier Settings for Winter

Many people ask:

  • What’s the best humidity setting for your house?
  • What should my AprilAire be set at in winter?
  • What are the best AprilAire humidifier settings for winter?

It depends.

The answer depends on your home: Does it have a lot of wood flooring or paneling? Is it an open concept or smaller rooms?

If you enjoy playing music, stringed instruments with wood bodies or cases need humidity to preserve the wood.

When it’s time to adjust your AprilAire humidifier, we recommend a “Set it and forget it approach.”

  • October through March: 35%
  • April through September: Turn it off

Mark “Activate Humidifier” on your calendar.

When it’s time to activate your whole-house humidifier, follow these easy steps:

  1. Make sure your humidifier is plugged in and open the bypass damper (on some models) to allow humidified air to flow freely.*
  2. Check to be sure the water supply is turned on.
  3. Adjust the humidistat to 35%.

For the best performance, replace the water panel annually.

*Bypass Humidifier Tips:

  • Open the bypass during the heating season, if available on your humidifier.
  • Close the bypass during air conditioning season, if available on your humidifier.
