Easy Electrical Upgrades for Security, Safety & Convenience

Jun 07, 2023

Whether you’re in an older home or a fairly new build, electrical upgrades can provide greater security, safety, and convenience.

Many upgrades are simple solutions that will make your home work better for your family and provide increased protection.

Let’s explore a few of these easy electrical upgrades you can make in your home.

Make Your Home Safer

If your home currently has knob and tube wiring—quite common in older properties—it’s time to consider replacing it. While this type of electrical wiring used to be standard practice from the 1880s to 1950s, it has been deemed a more hazardous form of electrical wiring and cannot power your home in the same way that more modern wiring can.

While it is important to have your home rewired if this is the current style of electrical wiring you have, it is also crucial not to attempt to DIY this. It is complicated to navigate and can prove dangerous for those who are not certified electricians.

Another change to consider to increase the safety of your home is to add GFCI outlets. A ground fault circuit interrupter outlet, or GFCI for short, greatly reduces the chance of being severely shocked or even electrocuted by an outlet.

Older homes may not have GFCI installed throughout, while all new builds are required to have this type of outlet. If you live in an older property or don’t currently have GFCI outlets throughout your entire home, this is an excellent time to get them changed out to increase your home’s safety for everyone in it.

Another reason to consider making either of the upgrades above is that your homeowner’s insurance policy will likely cover it and may even require these changes to continue to cover your home. After these changes are made, many homeowners see their insurance rates go down as a result of the upgrades and safety and security that they provide.

While it may be an initial investment to have some of these upgrades made, it can benefit not just your safety, but your wallet in the long run!

Make it More Convenient

Do you wish you could change how your living room furniture is configured? Would you love to redesign your bedroom and move things around? Is a lack of outlets keeping you from achieving the look you want?

Many homeowners have this issue and think they must deal with it. Instead of designing a room to their tastes, they design it towards the placement of the outlets. But, it doesn’t have to be this way!

Adding additional outlets to a specific room or throughout your entire house is easier than people think and can make a huge impact on the look, feel, and convenience of your home.

No more walking all the way around a room to try and plug something in. You can simply have additional outlets added to make your space work for your needs.

Make It More Secure

While changing out wiring and outlets keeps your home safer, what about the security outside your home?

One of the most effective ways to keep a residential home more secure is through outdoor lighting. Walkway lighting improves safety both for your family coming home but also for guests coming and going, as well as detecting potential threats.

Another excellent security measure is to install Ring or Nest cameras and doorbells. These are effective tools for making your home more secure. To install these devices correctly, you may need an electrician’s help. This all depends on your existing wiring. While you may be able to replace the new doorbell with your current one, it may also require an electrician’s help in changing the wiring to accommodate the new device.

Whether you install motion-detecting floodlights, walkway lighting, a video-activated doorbell, or all three, these simple changes can make a huge difference in the security of your home.
