5 Signs That Your Gas Furnace Needs Repairs

May 18, 2021

A gas furnace is a silent protector that keeps your home warm and cozy, especially during chilly winter days. You rarely notice its presence until it stops functioning correctly. Furnaces have a limited life span and get damaged due to lack of maintenance and wear and tear. Identifying the early warning signs and repairing the damage can significantly help you extend your furnace’s life.

Here are five signs that your furnace needs repairs:

1. Weird noises

The most common sign of a problem is weird noises coming off from your furnace; they can sound like a rattling, banging, or air whisper. If cold air accompanies these noises from your HVAC system, call a professional technician immediately. The combination of both means that your furnace is on the verge of shutting down. If this is the case, your furnace can also burst, causing damage to property and potentially injury.

2. Unmanageable thermostat

If you are often cranking up the thermostat in vain, the most probable cause is that your furnace is damaged. It is also possible that the thermostat is faulty, however, there is no way you can identify where the fault is by yourself. If this is happening too often, it would be best to call an HVAC technician to inspect the furnace and thermostat. They will also look for any other issues like leaking ducts.

3. High electricity bills

If you are paying more energy bills than usual and you have repaired the air ducts more than once to combat that, the most probable cause is your furnace isn’t working at full potential. It is also likely that your furnace’s internal system is exhausted and needs replacement.

4. Yellow flames

The flames of a furnace normally burn blue, not yellow or any other color. If you notice yellow flames, it is a red flag. This means that the fuel in the furnace isn’t clean, and most likely, you and your family are inhaling dangerous carbon monoxide with each breath. The best thing you can do here is turn off the heater immediately and leave the house. Call a professional to repair your furnace.

5. Life expectancy

Even with regular maintenance, furnaces have an average life expectancy of 15 years. Proper maintenance can extend the lifespan by up to 2 to 3 years. But you will need to replace it, eventually. If your HVAC furnace is older than 15 years, replace it, even if you don’t notice any warning signs. It can shut off at any moment and severely damage your HVAC system.
