Yearly Upkeep That Can Save You from Power Outage Chaos
You invested in a
home backup generator, and now you’re never without power! But just like your car, your air-cooled backup generator needs to be maintained to operate properly and perform at its optimal efficiency.
With power outages taking place throughout the country and storm season around the corner, here are a few maintenance tips to keep your generator operating properly.
For optimal efficiency when using your air-cooled generator, follow these tips:
- Timing is everything! When was the last time your generator had its air filter, oil filter, and spark plugs replaced? Most air-cooled units need to be serviced every 12 to 24 months, or after every 200 hours of use, whichever comes first.
- Keep your unit, and its major components, clean and free of any debris on both the inside and outside, including the intake and exhaust louvers on the sides.
- Battery terminals should be cleaned and tightened, voltage checked, and inspected visually for leaking fluid.
- Regularly check all major components for rust and/or corrosion.
- Check the engine oil level to make sure it is full. If it needs refilled, refer to your manual for the correct type of oil. Also, keep a spare bottle of oil, in case you’re hit with extended outages. If there’s not enough oil in the unit, the generator will shut down to protect the engine.
